New Turf

Laying new turf involves rolling out pre-grown grass sod over prepared soil. This method delivers an “instant” lawn that can be ready to enjoy within a short time frame.

Advantages:

  • Instant Results: One of the biggest advantages of laying turf is the immediate transformation. Within a day or two, you can have a lush, green lawn. After about two to three weeks of proper care, it can withstand regular foot traffic.
  • Less Maintenance Initially: Once turf is laid, it requires less initial maintenance than seeding. Since the grass is already established, it only needs regular watering and mowing. It quickly starts to grow roots and becomes self-sufficient.
  • Erosion Control: If your property has sloped areas, laying turf is a great way to prevent soil erosion. The established grass helps hold the soil in place, which is harder to achieve with seeds that take time to sprout.
  • Weed Reduction: Turf usually comes free of weeds, meaning you start with a clean, weed-free lawn. Seeded lawns, on the other hand, can face competition from weeds as the grass takes longer to establish.
  • Uniform Growth: Turf is grown under ideal conditions by professionals, resulting in a consistent thickness, colour, and growth pattern.

Seeding Lawns

Seeding involves scattering grass seeds over prepared soil and nurturing them to grow. This method requires more time and effort but is much less costly than turf.

Advantages:

  • Cost-Effective: Seeding is significantly cheaper than laying new turf. The cost of grass seed is minimal compared to the cost of sod. It’s an excellent option for those looking for a budget-friendly solution to a new lawn.
  • More Grass Variety: When you choose to seed, you have a wide range of grass species and blends available. This gives you more control over the type of grass best suited to your climate, soil type, and sunlight conditions. It’s a more customisable option.
  • Stronger Root System: Grass grown from seed tends to develop a more extensive and deeper root system over time. This makes the lawn more drought-resistant and resilient in the long run.
  • Ideal for Large Areas: If you have a very large area to cover, seeding is far more economical than buying turf. You can cover vast spaces for a fraction of the cost.
  • Less Soil Preparation: The soil preparation process for seeding is usually simpler than for turf installation. It mainly requires tilling and smoothing the surface to ensure good seed-to-soil contact.
Soil assessment

Site Assessment and Consultation

We start by visiting your property to assess the current condition of your garden. We check factors like soil quality, drainage, sunlight, and slope, and discuss your vision for the lawn. Based on this, we provide expert recommendations and a free quote for the job.

Step 2: Soil Preparation

Healthy lawns require well-prepared soil. Our team begins by removing any existing grass, weeds, or debris. We then rotovate the soil to a depth of at least 100mm, improving aeration and ensuring the soil is loose enough for the turf roots to establish properly. We also add nutrient-rich topsoil if necessary to ensure optimal growing conditions.

Step 3: Levelling and Grading

Once the soil is prepared, we carefully level the area to create a smooth, even surface. Proper levelling is crucial for good drainage and a neat appearance. We take care to ensure that water flows away from buildings and pathways to prevent pooling.

Step 4: Turf Selection and Laying

We use only premium-quality turf suited to the Sussex climate, ensuring that your lawn will thrive throughout the year. The turf is laid with precision, piece by piece, with each roll carefully aligned to ensure no gaps or overlaps. Our experts handle the entire installation process to ensure a perfect fit, with every edge neatly trimmed for a seamless finish.

Step 5: Watering and Aftercare

After laying the turf, we water the new lawn thoroughly to encourage root establishment. We provide you with a detailed aftercare guide, advising you on watering schedules, mowing, and fertilizing to ensure your new lawn grows strong and healthy. We also offer ongoing maintenance services if required, keeping your lawn in perfect condition.
